Sometimes people have a phobia of the dentist, or experience anxiety during dental procedures. If you have a hard time getting through a dental procedure because of fear of anxiety, you can relax — Aponia Dental offers something that could help put you at ease.
Giving an especially nervous dental patient a little nitrous sedation (or oral sedation) helps to minimize any anxiety during their dental visit. We administer it, and you begin to enter a state of dreamy sleepiness. Nitrous sedation is a popular option to relieve anxiety during dental procedures.
The Aponia Dental team is very experienced with using nitrous sedation to improve the comfort of our patients. We are committed to regular team training sessions at the University of Alberta, where we work to learn new techniques and keep up-to-date on the latest technological advances.
During nitrous sedation, you do not care what is happening around you. It feels like you are experiencing something very pleasant – even funny! – and you will be in a state of contented happiness.
Almost any adult, teenager or child is a candidate for nitrous sedation. It’s particularly useful for people with a fear of dental visits, people with a history of anxiety/panicking, or mentally-handicapped patients. But it's also preferred by people who would simply rather not be fully "aware" during a procedure.
You are allowed to go home following the procedure, but cannot drive for the rest of the day — and must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The nitrous sedation wears off very quickly, but could leave you feeling unsteady for the first few hours.
